How professional genealogy research works

A good investigation begins with a question and ends with a conclusion the evidence can support.

Define the question

Choose one person, couple, or relationship. A question such as “Who were Anna’s parents?” provides a useful boundary; “Find my whole family” usually does not.

Build a starting timeline

List known events with dates, locations, and the source of each statement. Separate a family story from a document created close to the event. An estimate is useful when clearly labeled.

Search and compare

Search record groups appropriate to the place and period. Try spelling variants and investigate relatives and neighbors. A matching name is a lead; dates, places, and relationships must also fit.

Explain the conclusion

A research report should cite sources, discuss contradictions, state confidence, and record unsuccessful searches where useful. An unresolved question can still yield a valuable plan for the next investigation.
